“The Need To-day of a Strong Faith in God” (Prize Essay), by Maurine Whipple.  Dixie Owl, January 1, 1920, p. 7-13. 

Maurine was a 16-year old sophomore at Dixie Normal College when she wrote this essay, which appeared in the school newspaper.

  1. Yeah, I thought about your story when I read it. How much does the persona she presents in this essay fit how you imagined her? [It seems like they usually drove when they went from St. George to SLC. There was a train that they could catch in Modena, Utah, 64 miles to the north, that went to SLC, but it seems like they didn't take it much.]

    Pretty close. Precocious, intelligent, projecting confidence through her language. Of course, I imagined that as a bit of a front and this is only her front, so yes this is just how I imagined her but only part of what I imagined. Great find!
